Its time to share my birthday book haul with all of you !! 🙂
Forgive the excess exclamation marks folks (after all it is my birthday today) !!
So a while back I had posted this teaser
Before I move on to its contents, a quick apology for the bad quality of photos you are about to witness. In my typical style, I have decided to keep all the books wrapped in their packaging till I start reading them. But as always I’ll give the Goodreads links so that you can check them out and let me know what you think of them !
This year I decided that I will buy some books for myself as a gift – books I have been putting off for a while, etc. So when I posted this on twitter, this happened
I have never read a graphic novel till date but I thought what better time to start than this year. So I asked him for recommendations and ended up choosing 1 out of 4. Here are the final 3 I chose to buy for myself 🙂
Laburnum for My Head, Temsula Ao
From the Ruins of Empire, Pankaj Mishra
Now moving on to the books gifted by my mother (my father has appealed to my foodie side so no books from him for now). After spending a considerable amount of time going through my TBR, choosing some, leaving some out, looking at discounts, etc. we narrowed it down to 8 books and here they are !
The Kill List, Frederick Forsyth
Wonderworld and other stories, Sunil Gangopadhyay
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest,Ken Kesey
The Sceptical Patriot, Sidin Vadukut
Collected works of R K Narayan
Land Where I Flee, Prajwal Parajuly
The Luminaries, Eleanor Catton
That is a grand total of 11 books ! I am beside myself with joy !! 🙂
As always, I want to know what you guys think. Find any of the above interesting ? Read any of them ? What is the verdict on my selections ? 🙂
A fascinating selection! Belated happy birthday!

Happy Birthday!!! 😀
A fascinating list. I didn’t get on too well with One Flew Over…, having made the mistake of watching (and loving) the film first. But I think I’d have enjoyed it much more if I hadn’t had that in my head. ‘The Luminaries’ was a worthy Booker winner, I thought – I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I look forward to your reviews of the Indian authors – they’re all new to me…

I’m pathetic when it comes to movies – haven’t watched a single “classic” or most of the recent ones for that matter so I’m always clear on that front 😀

I wish you a happy belated birthday!
As I suspected, this is a great haul.I’ve always wanted to read graphic novels and I even have quite a few on my wish list; however I’ve read none so far, always delaying my purchase to a later date.I guess I should get started.
I’ve read a lot of good things about The Luminaries.I think it will be a Tour de Force,in light of the techniques Catton used. The size is quite intimidating – it is the biggest book to have won the Booker – but I guess it will be worth a read!
One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest too is on my wish list.It is often cited among the best-known classics,so I think it is a must-read.
As for Alice Munro, there just is not anyone like her.I have Too Much Happiness at home, and plan to buy her other collections. She is regarded by many as the Canadian Chekhov!
Chekhov being considered to be the best short-storyteller of all time, this epithet tells you much about Munro’s writing level! Besides she won the Nobel Prize last year,as you might already know.
By the way, when you buy from Amazon your books come sealed in one big box?
Given that I would have to pay for shipping,I have been buying from the bookdepository since last year.If they are not grossly defective,my books always have a blemish here and there.I am much unsatisfied with the book depo, and thus,am looking for an alternative.

Luminaries size is definitely intimidating – I’m planning to reserve it for December and get the rest done 1st.
This will also be my 1st Alice Munro – that is why I went for the Nobel winning work – makes selection easier ! 🙂 I’m also intrigued by her work “Hateship, Friendship,…..” – it is getting a lot of rave reviews. Even when she won the Nobel, there was a lot of opinion that this itself was delayed – she should have got it long ago ! So I couldn’t resist buying it 😀
Actually I have never bought anything from Amazon – I always buy it from an Indian company named Flipkart – have been using it for years now !!
