Top Ten Tuesday : Bookish Resolutions

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by the Broke and Bookish that is all about lists. I’ve enjoyed Top Ten posts by others so much that this week I’ve decided to join in the fun. This is my first ever Top Ten post and what better way to start than with a Top Ten Freebie ?

Since my blog is all about me resuscitating my inner bookworm, I thought it would be ideal to list my bookish resolutions. Hopefully, they’ll also give an idea about what you can expect from my blog in future 🙂

With that long introduction, jumping to the list !

7.Keep track of the books read

Hence the blog and a Goodreads account. Its shocking how I’ve lost track of the books I read in the past. Only now I’m recollecting the various books I have read but my memory of a lot of them seems hazy.

6.Get a bookshelf and get organised

I’m not the most tidy person you’ll meet and my room is in a state of perpetual disarray. In my bookshelf the books are stacked along all possible directions. Apart from that, I’ve sneaked a few into other shelves here and there. A whole stack is just sitting on a standalone chair after it was evicted by my father from his shelf. You get the drift right ?

5.Stop getting put-off by huge books

An easy read for me is anything between 300-500 pages. I don’t venture near books touching 800-1000 unless I am looking at very long summer vacations. A friend lent me a 1000+ page book in Aug 2013 and after reading a quarter of it I put it in cold storage (hope he doesn’t read this post). The book is actually very good – its just that I go looking for easy reads more often than not. Time to start taking the bull by the horns !

4. Explore new genres and authors

Anyone who has been following my posts for a while would by now know how much I lament about the lack of diversity in my reading thus far. I haven’t read anything in romance, political thriller, historical fiction, non-fiction outside India, etc. So it is going to be a major factor in my reading choices in the future

3. Read more on world history

I think I can confidently say that my knowledge of world history is average. I mean its not bad by any means but there are gaps in my knowledge that I would like to fill. For example, African history is something I definitely should read more on.

Here is an interesting story I read …… A group of media students were writing an exam and one of the multiple choice questions was “Who/what is Kofi Annan ?”. It seems a majority of them chose “A Sri Lankan delicacy” 😐

2.Read more Indian literature preferably in Indian languages

Pretty self-explanatory. The last time I read fiction in Hindi was probably as part of school curriculum so I definitely need to buckle up and read more. Of the 10 books I have read this year, 4 are by Indian authors. Its a start but I would like to scale it up.

1.To read more and when that is done, some more !

If my blog starts having any existential questions of its own then the above line is the answer to it. I started this blog after reading about a person who read a 100 books in 2011, set a target of a 100 in 2013 but went on to read 101. I’m taking baby steps here but one day I can hopefully blog about having achieved the same

And that concludes my first ever Top Ten Tuesday 🙂 Do any of these points resonate with you ? Feel free to leave a comment ! !

  1. I live for super-long books, and always find it amusing when I hear other writers talking about how, say, a book of 120,000 or 180,000 words is “so long.” That’s a drop in the bucket next to some of what I’ve written! There’s nothing quite like a long historical saga with lots of characters, a book you can climb into and live in for a few weeks.

I definitely should read other genres more. I read historical and classic world literature almost exclusively, and need to explore a wider variety of books.

    1. I have nothing against long books – its just I need to be looking at months of free time before I jump in.
I am just the opposite – I need to read more of historical and world literature ! So far, its only been crime fiction, etc.

  2. Great resolutions 🙂 I’ve found that my blog is a great way to keep track of what I’ve read. I’m still rubbish at updating Goodreads. Oops!

  3. I have a problem of starting big books as well. I always put them off for when I have time, but I don’t put any effort into making time for the book itself!

  4. I don’t know what I’d do without Goodreads ❤ I don't know how I ever lived without it hah! But I also started using spreadsheets this year to track certain details about the books I read (Publisher, format, page count, series ,etc). It's been great! Good luck with your resolutions!

  5. Great goals here! I have found blogging really does help me keep track of all the books I’ve read because it is surprisingly easy to forget them after awhile. And branching out to other genres is a personal goal of mine as well… it’s easy to get in a rut and read in a genre you know you’ll enjoy all the time.

    1. Reading one genre is one thing but sometimes I tend to read one author at a stretch – it almost happened this year with John Grisham but I decided not to read another Grisham till 2015. Thanks for stopping by ! 🙂

  7. Goodreads is such a wonderful tool to keep track of what you’re reading! Unfortunately, it’s also the most tedious and annoying thing for me to sit and organize (because I’m extremely lazy :D). That’s hard to imagine that you haven’t read anything in romance. Albeit not specific, I’m sure you’ve come across elements as such in your other reads.

    1. So true its hard to organise ! Goodreads has been hinting that I should add more shelves but I’m just too lazy to do that !
Its probably time I read a good romance after all ! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by !

      1. Pretty much! It’s exactly as you say “here, add some more shelves!” …while you’re at it “add these books to your TBR list too!” … and since you added more, “lets organize said shelf (re: step 1)!”

        Never ending!

  8. Big books scare me too! No matter how much I want to read Game of Thrones, I still back off every time I try to pick it up. My cap is about 500 pages as well; any more and I feel like I’m about to get married. It takes a lot of commitment to get to 1000 pages!

  9. I work in a bookstore, and whenever someone makes a remark about how long a book is, I say, “Have you read Harry Potter/Game of Thrones?” 70/100 the answer is yes, and I promptly hand over the Big Scary Book and smile. Imagine being the editor behind that tome you’re afraid of — trust me when I say the editor had twice, sometimes three times, the amount of reading to plow through before publishing it into what you have in your hands. Wishing you all the luck!
